Your child will be lead through fun games and activities to help develop fundamental movement skills like catching, passing, hand-eye coordination and balance, all involved in playing rugby league. They will also have the chance to fine tune skills in listening, understanding and responding to instructions. Learning these skills are an integral aspect in helping your child participate in a fun team environment.

Our Mini Magpie program commences from Thursday 28th February 4pm at Berry Park, Mt Colah.

2018 was a year of change at Asquith Magpies.

I had big shoes to fill replacing Mike Mercer as Football Club President. Mike had been in this role for 10 years and had contributed so much to the club which we will be forever grateful. Mike's contribution was recognised at the North Sydney Volunteers Day where he was awarded a Men of League Volunteer award for his contribution and committed service.

My job, as President was made that much easier through the support I received from both Mike as part of his handover, the members of the Football Committee, the Magpies Waitara Board and the many families and volunteers that make the Asquith Magpies the best Junior League Club in the district.

Let’s look at some of the great highlights of the year that was:

• The year started with a heavy recruitment drive through schools, gala days and fetes. This was represented in many new families joining the club

• One of the standouts of this recruitment drive was having State of Origin and Manly brothers – Jake & Tom Trbojevic having a training session with some of out teenage teams. It is not too often you can get greats like these two kicking a ball with our kids at training.

• Our usual trials with teams from the Central Coast – Kariong & Ourimbah was a great success to get everyone ready for the season ahead. 2018 NORTH SYDNEY DISTRICT JUNIOR RUGBY FOOTBALL LEAGUE INC. ANNUAL REPORT Page 10 A big focus in 2018 was about Game Day Experience. I think everyone will agree that we delivered on this.

• Eftpos was added to the Canteen facilities which increased our merchandise sales and painted Storey Park Black & White with supporters • Continuation of our teams running out to their chosen entrance music

• Themed days including – Mother’s Day, Women in League, Sponsors Day and Old Boys Day.

• Who can forget our MAD MASCOT DASH – with the Magpie and Bear mascots competing in obstacle courses and having fun with our junior teams. This year Asquith Magpies decided to get behind the Mark Hughes Beanies for Brain Cancer Charity. As a club we were able to raise over $6000 for this great course and hope this will continue to grow in the years ahead.

• We participated in our Annual Appreciation march at ANZ stadium before the Souths v Cronulla game. The Souths organisers were so impressed with the representation and team spirit of the Magpies they invited one of our mini teams to compete at ANZ stadium at half time of Souths vs West Tigers.

• This year we competed in the National Primary Games, taking 5 teams to Tamworth for a weekend of Rugby League playing against some tough country competition. There were many families that joined this trip representing the club. The feedback received from players and families has been overwhelming with this trip being the highlight of the year for many kids. We are already starting to plan for this trip again in 2019.

Our highlights were amplified by some of the amazing team and individual results we achieved in 2018:

• Two Asquith Magpies teams made the Grand Final – the U10 and U14 Gold

• The U9’s and U20’s teams were fortunate to play in the semi finals but were just beaten on the day.

• Kaeo Weekes from the U17’s again was chosen to play in the NSW U16 team vs QLD, to which they came home with the win.

• Sam Richardson from the U17’s was chosen to represent NSW in the Indigenous Team travelling to Tonga later this year • Billy Pollard for the U17’s was chosen in the Australian School Boys Rugby team.

• Asquith Magpies also had strong representation in the North Sydney Development Squads.

Let’s review the year that was for each team in 2018:

Under 6's

The U6’s were lucky enough to have two teams again this year. Great retention and recruitment from all involved. With a mix of new and old kids in both teams, the development of the kids was evident as the year progressed. The most important part of U6 football is having fun and this was seen both on and off the field by this group. It was great to see the involvement and enjoyment from new and old parents in and around the club on game day. Seeing the smiles on all the kids faces both before and after games shows we are on a winning formula and have a great future ahead for these “Mini Magpies”. A big thanks to the Coaches Adam Steele and Phil Huxtable who were well supported by the team managers Deb Johnson and Tiffany Huxtable.

Under 7's

Stepping out of the shadows of U6 and merging together as one team it was great to watch the development of the U7’s from the prior year. Brad coaches to have fun and that is exactly what these kids do every week. Their team spirit and love for the game shows at training and also on game day. A highlight for the U7’s this year was the Junior Appreciation round at ANZ and their final gala day played at North Sydney Oval. Well done to Coach Brad Wickham and Team Manager Belinda Wickham.

Under 8's

The pressure was on this year backing up from an undefeated season last year. With the addition of 3 new kids to the team this year they certainly didn’t disappoint. The opposition lifted every time they came up against this U8 Team, and whilst they didn’t win every game they never gave up and again ensured that the message of “fun” and “good sportsmanship” was always delivered. Highlights for the U8’s included their first away trip to Tamworth, coming up against some strong country opposition. The season concluded with a half time game on ANZ stadium during the Souths v Tigers match. I am fortunate enough to be coaching this group of kids, but it is made easier with the support from Manager Danielle Tickner.

Under 9's

The first year in competition rugby league for our U9’s. They certainly didn’t disappoint being very competitive throughout the season and making it through to the Semi Finals, where they were unfortunately beaten in the last seconds of the game. This team had lots of fun all year and are looking forward to being a part of the Tamworth tour in 2019. Thanks to Coach Ryan Gartner and Manager Jeff Green for continued support great work with this group of kids.

Under 10's

Another successful year for this team. Having been Minor Premiers in 2017, they again finished equal first on points in 2018. Unfortunately, they weren’t lucky enough to get the win on Grand Final day, but they put up a tenacious effort and were only defeated in the final minutes of the game. This team also attended the Tamworth trip, with some U9 players coming up to assist. A lot of fun was had playing numerous games of football over the weekend. Well done to Coach Jake Enasio for another great year and his Manager Shannon Van Deventer

Under 12's

2018 was going to be the year and it was. For the first time in 4 years we got more than just enough players for a team. This year was about the boys getting a greater understanding of rugby league with all of them learning positions and knowing where to stand on the field. It was also the first time entering Manly territory. We picked up 5 new players and 3 returning from previous years. The boys improved as we went along during the season and even managed a few wins. Going to Tamworth was a highlight of the year. This was great experience for the boys where they gained confidence and grew as a team. Thanks to Coach Duane Gwiazdzinski and Manager Caroline Worne

Under 14's

After a very successful 2017, the boys all came back eager and ready to go. With such a great team culture we even had new boys wanting to join this team, coupled with some of our U13’s having to play up in this age group due to a lack of numbers in their own. At the start of the season we entered three teams into the competition however as the season progressed and playing at multiple locations at different times this became difficult to manage and the team were amalgamated into two. This team worked exceptionally well as a collective group of kids. The White team were fortunate to make the semi’s and fought out a tough semi final against Manly Christin Brothers who were the premiers last year. The team then went on to play in the Grand Final at Brookvale oval vs Beacon Hill. Whilst they didn’t come home with the trophy they played a hard game and are determined to be their next year.

The U14’s group travelled together by bus to Tamworth which was a great bonding experience and opened their eyes to the music of John Denver. Well done to all involved in this team Coaches: Paul Pollard & John Habkouk, Managers: Tom Barnes and Jane Mimmo.

Under 15's

Starting with only a handful of kids at preseason training we knew that 2018 was going to be a tough year. We were determined to try to make it work though. With the help from some U14’s playing up, with most weeks having no reserves we battled through the first half of the season and remained competitive. Unfortunately, with some injuries and trying to juggle multiple players in age groups at different venues we had to make a difficult decision to fold the U15’s team. Some of these boys finished the season playing with the U15’s Berowra Wallabies, helping them make the Semi-finals. These boys should be congratulated as it is never easy going to a rival club at anytime however they held their heads high and did our club proud. We will do everything possible to ensure there is a team for them at Asquith Magpies next year. A very big thanks to Coach Anthos Simon and Manager Jane Mimmo.

Under 17's

A fantastic effort by the team during the year. Playing in a combined comp which saw them playing across Sydney. This team has such tremendous talent playing great football, however they unfortunately just missed out on making the finals. Hopefully we can retain this talent at the club and the boys continue to play in our older grades into the future. Well done to Coach Chris Weekes and Manager Emma Gillies.

Under 20's

Adding an U20’s to our squad this year has provided our juniors an extra pathway into senior football. This year we had an influx on new players to the club and this team to fill the spots. The new coaching staff and players fitting in well with the club’s culture and were able to play some exciting football throughout the year. The U20’s made it through to the Semi-finals, being beaten controversially by Easts Campbelltown at their home ground. Well done on a great year and we hope these players return in 2019. Thanks to Coach Daniel Hutton and Manager Hugh Hutton for all your work in establishing this team.

The fun never stops at the Asquith Magpies and it's not just our junior magpies who get have all the fun.

Off the field our parents and club volunteers capped off a wonderful 2018 season and kicked off the silly season with a Christmas themed Trivia night at our home nest, Magpies Waitara.

There was lots of fun games and raffles held throughout the night with our Under 8's parents claiming the inaugural Intelligent Magpie title.

In what has been a very busy few weeks since our last announcement, the mighty Asquith Magpies have signed several more players for our Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield sides for 2019.

A further five players from this year's squad have re-signed.

Mike Pearsall, Jared Palmer, Jackson Williams, Feao Lavemai & Robbie Williams are all returning which is an outstanding outcome for the club and our coaching staff led by Head Coaches Pat Weisner & Brendan Perenara (aka B-man).

In addition, we are extremely pleased to announce the following new players to the Asquith Magpies senior flock.

Connor Johnston - An exciting Berowra Junior who plays outside backs and has been playing with Berowra A Grade. Connor also played 17s with Asquith and SG Ball with Norths.

Heath Garay - Is a very talented Lock or Hooker who has played Sydney Shield, Ron Massey & ISP for Blacktown/Manly in 2016.

Magnus Stromquist - It is fantastic to have this great player back at Asquith. Magnus played juniors with Asquith from the age of 9 through to 15's. He went onto play 46 Toyota Cup games with Manly and 142 State Cup games with Manly, Wyong, Wynnum Manly Qld, Mounties and Wentworthville. He will be a mighty asset in our forward pack along with the other talented players we have signed.

Ron Massey & Sydney Shield commence pre-season training at 6pm on Tuesday 27 November at Macquarie University and will train four Tuesdays finishing on 18 December before resuming on 15 January 2019.

The Asquith Rugby League Football Club are fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful group of volunteers. Our football club relies on the help of our these extraordinary volunteers who offer their time week in and week out. The value of their committed contributions to our club has no limit.

ASQUITH HAVE MIXED FINALS WEEKEND

The Asquith Magpies’ NSW Rugby League Finals campaign had a mixed start at St Marys Leagues Stadium last Saturday.

Tony Dosen, HHH-FM Sports Director, reviews Week 1 of the finals for our senior magpie teams.

Ron Massey Cup The Magpies’ Ron Massey Cup season came to a disappointing end when they went down 38-14 to the Glebe-Burwood Wolves in their Elimination Final. Fielding a ‘patched up’ side due to various injuries and suspensions, the Magpies were down 10-0 – and had back rower Kurt Horton sin binned - before striking back with tries from hooker Jake Attard and interchange rake Shae Jarvis to be only down 14-10 at half time. Asquith still were in the contest when skipper Matt Place scored early in the second half to cut the Wolves’ lead to 18-14, before Glebe-Burwood came away from a tiring Magpies defence in the last 30 minutes to finish Asquith’s Massey Cup season. Horton landed one goal from three attempts in his last game for the club before moving to Queensland in the off season.

Sydney Shield The Magpies had better luck in their Sydney Shield Elimination Final last Saturday when they outclassed the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 54-14 to progress to a sudden death semi-final this weekend. After conceding the opening try, Asquith took control with tries to Alex Nicholls-O’Neill, Vinny Ngaro, Andy Oughtred, Caleb Campbell and Jayden El-Jalkh to set up a commanding 30-8 half time lead. The Magpies then went on with the job in the second half with Robbie Williams, Luke Hodge and Robert Tuliatu scoring tries, before El-Jalkh completed his double to close out Asquith’s win. Treymaine Brown landed a perfect nine goals from nine attempts with the boot. Asquith take on Minor Premiers East Campbelltown in a tough sudden death Sydney Shield Semi-Final at Kogarah Jubilee Oval this Saturday at 11:00am.

Congratulations to our Under 10's who played in their second consecutive Grand Final at North Sydney Oval against Pennant Hills Cherrybrook on Saturday.

Our junior magpies displayed incredible determination and persistence to fight their way back into the match after trailing by two early tries to the Stags. Our magpies hit back with some terrific teamwork and fancy footwork, edging their way into the lead in the closing minutes. However the Stags proved too strong, scoring a final try in the dying minutes and stealing victory.

Well done to our Under 10's on an exemplary and commendable 2018 Season.

Under 9's

The Under 9's have successfully made the Semi-Finals in their first year of competitive football and will launch their finals campaign in the do-or-die Minor Semi against Willoughby at 10.10am on Saturday.

Under 10's

The Under 10's are looking to go one better in 2018 after finishing runners-up in 2017. For the second consecutive year the Under 10's will compete in the Finals and will initially take on Pennant Hills / Cherrybrook in the Major Semi-Final at 12pm Greenway Park.

Ron Massey Cup

The Asquith Magpies’ kept their hopes of making the Ron Massey Cup Top Four with an exciting 34-16 win over the Guildford Owls at Storey Park last Sunday.

In arguably the best Ron Massey Cup match seen at Storey Park this season, the Magpies started strongly in the first half with tries from Jake Maizen, Jale Seninawanawa and Shae Jarvis to take a 14-6 lead. A well worked try from Amanaki Veamatahau extended the Asqutih lead to 18-6 at the half time break.

Guildford came out fired up in the second half after an almighty blast from their coach at the interval with two quick tries to cut the Magpies lead to 18-16 after 10 minutes of the second half. Asquith then steadied with Will Solway’s try in the 53rd minute, before Seninawanawa completed his double and Braden Batiste scored the match winning try in the closing stages.

Sydney Shield

Asquith made it a winning double with a comfortable 50-24 win over an undermanned Guildford in the earlier Sydney Shield match last Sunday.

Taking full advantage of the visitors only having one fresh reserve and a 14 man rotation, Asquith took the lead with an early double from Corey Browne-Higginbotham. Pint sized fullback Kyle Tukapua then set the match alight with the first two of his four tries to have Asquith in command with a 24-12

lead at half time.

Tukapua completed his quartet in the second half, with Andy Oughtred, Alex Nicholls-O’Neill, Josh Hall and Ryley Angles-Corke scoring the other tries as the Magpies coasted to an easy win.

Ron Massey Cup

The Asquith Magpies returned to the winners list in the Ron Massey Cup with a comfortable 40-6 disposal of the Hills District Bulls in their match at Crestwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills last Sunday. From the time hooker Jake Attard scored his first try in the eighth minute, the Magpies were never in danger of defeat.

A first half attacking blitz saw lock Kurt Horton, winger Jake Maizen, and second rower Jackson Williams all score tries before half time. Attard also completed a first half double to give Asquith a commanding 28-0 lead at the break. Centre Josh Fraser virtually and backrower Jake Samoa scored Asquith’s second half tries.

Skipper Matt Place landed five goals from six attempts with the boot, and prop Will Solway landed Asquith’s other goal.

Sydney Shield Asquith also returned to winning form in the Sydney Shield with a 56-14 thumping of the Bulls with 12 – and at times 11 men for most of a controversial early match last Sunday.

Flying winger Alex Nicholls-O’Neill marked his return to Sydney Shield with four tries including a first half hat trick as Asquith raced out to a 36-0 lead at the break. Jubilee Soloa bagged a double for Asquith, while Jeremy Marshall, Corey Browne-Higginbotham, Caleb Campbell and Treymaine Brown got the Magpies’ other tries.

Asquith were reduced to 12 men when second rower Matt French was sent off by referee Nathan Loveday in the 21st minute, and then 11 men when Alipate Tani was sin binned with six minutes left.

The Magpies finish their string of mid season away games this Saturday against the in form Cabramatta Two Blues at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta in Sydney Shield at 1pm, then Ron Massey Cup at 3pm.

Congratulations to our Junior Magpie, Kaeo Weekes on his selection in the NSW Under 16 state squad.

This will be the second year in a row Kaeo will be representing the NSW Blues Under 16's side. Kaeo will be running out for the mighty blues who will take on Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday 15th July.

Ron Massey Cup

The Asquith Magpies kept within striking distance of the Ron Massey Cup top four with a convincing 36-10 win over the Western Suburbs in the all-Magpies "battle of the birds" at Storey Park.

Asquith blitzed Wests early with tries from Jackson Williams, Kurt Horton and Will Solway to lead 16-0 after 10 minutes.

Asquith consolidated their lead later in the first half with Horton completing his double and Riley Travers scoring to give Pat Wiesner's men a commanding 24-0 half time lead.

Travers also earned a double in the second half, with more tries from Jake Maizen and speedster Alex Nicholls-O'Neill completing Asquith's handsome victory.

Sydney Shield

Earlier in the day, a mid-game comeback was not enough for Asquith when it went down to the classy East Campbelltown Eagles 40-20 in its Sydney Shield match.

After being down 22-0 after 20 minutes, Asquith stormed back thanks to a hat trick from Caleb Campbell and a try from Vinny Ngaro but East Campbelltown secured the win in the late stages.

The Asquith Magpies returned to winning form in the Ron Massey Cup when they downed a 12 man Glebe-Burwood Wolves outfit 30-10 in their match at Storey Park last Sunday. After prop Brock Ilett scored the opening try to give Asquith a 6-0 lead, the visitors had Lachlan Stein sensationally sent off eight minutes from half time for an alleged headbutting incident. Asquith then took full advantage with their extra man in the second half with Asher Veamatahau scoring a double. Jake Maizen, Josh Fraser and Max Bailey scoring the other second half tries.

The Ron Massey Cup team now sit in 6th place on the competition ladder.

Sydney Shield The Magpies also tasted success in the earlier Sydney Shield match, overcoming a feisty Belrose Eagles 26-4 to move back to fourth place on the Shield table. After conceding the opening try, the Magpies struck back with a freakish Kane Allan try to lead 6-4 at half time. Amongst tough defence, Asquith went on with the job after half time with skipper Vinny Ngaro bagging a double, and Ngangarra Barker and Kyle Tukapua scoring second half tries.

The Magpies are back at Storey Park again this Sunday for their next matches against East Campbelltown in Sydney Shield at 1pm and Western Suburbs in Ron Massey Cup at 3pm.

On Friday night our Asquith Magpie premiership teams from 1968 and 1993 came together at Magpies Waitara to celebrate their 50 and 25 year reunions respectively.

The night was attended by past players and club volunteers reminiscing about their playing days and their grand final wins with many memories and tales shared on the night.

Some old Asquith Magpie jersey's were on display on the night and past players were presented with 50 and 25 year commemorative club polo shirts.

Our Junior Magpies had a busy action packed weekend celebrating the Junior Appreciation Round.

On Friday night our juniors were invited by the South Sydney Rabbitohs to participate in a Junior Appreciation March Past at ANZ stadium prior to the prime time NRL match Rabbitohs versus Sharks.

Despite the cold a large group of our Junior Magpies and families descended upon ANZ stadium where our junior players were very enthusiastic and eager to take the field to represent the Asquith Magpies. Our Magpies, led by president Mick Tickner, were very animated and vocal in the lead-up to their march past and the Asquith club song could be heard emanating from the depths of the tunnels below ANZ stadium. When our junior magpies emerged from the tunnel they were all beaming from ear to ear, waving to the crowd and high-fiving along the perimeter of the oval.

Afterwards our Magpie families settled in to watch the NRL match and were treated to the Rabbitohs thumping the Sharks.

The following morning our Under 6's and Under 7's were fortunate to play their Round 8 football match at the iconic North Sydney Oval. Our mini magpies were assisted with some on-field help in the form of the North Sydney Bears players, who during the game of play, provided encouragement, coaching and some insider player tips. Our littlest magpies were even treated to a half-time pep talk by Barney the Bear!

Afterwards our junior magpies were able to participate in some fun skills and drills set up by PlayNRL and the North Sydney Bears and formed a guard of honor for the Bears ISP match against the Dragons.

Ron Massey Cup

The Asquith Ron Massey Cup team has moved into third place on the ladder after a come-from-behind win over Penrith Brothers. With the home-field advantage at Storey Park on Staurday, our Mighty Magpies enjoyed an impressive win 28-12.

Penrith initially made things difficult and led 12-4 at the break, before the Asquith boys ran away with the match in the second half.

Jale Seninawanawa was called up in the last reshuffle after playing 55 minutes in the earlier Sydney Shield (reserve grade) match and scored the Magpies' only try in the first half.

Asquith then upped the ante with a gale force wind behind them in the second half. Tries from Josh Hall in the 44th minute and centre Mick Pearsall 11 minutes later gave the Magpies a 16-12 lead after Matt Place landed both conversions.

Late tries to hooker Jake Attard, with 12 minutes to play, and fullback Kyle Tukapua four minutes later, closed out the match for the Magpies.

After six rounds, there are no undefeated sides left in the competition, with competition leaders Glebe-Burwood Wolves slipping up against Cabramatta 20-18 on Saturday.

Sydney Shield

Meanwhile, Asquith reserve grade side moved to top of the Sydney Shield table after a 64-10 trashing of Penrith Brothers' reserve team.

The Sydney Shield Magpies ran riot in the first half, scoring nine tries to lead a whopping 52-nil at the break.

Storey Park was flooded in a sea of pink to help celebrate Mother's Day and our Magpie Mum's during our junior and senior home games on Saturday.

There were raffles held throughout the day, pink cupcakes and Beanies for Brain Cancer beanies for sale at the canteen.

Life Member and club volunteer, George Fretus also delighted our Magpie Mum's by surprising them with some beautiful red roses.

In the afternoon our Magpie Mum's were treated with scones from Bite Me Bakehouse with jam and cream, along with a glass of champagne on arrival. Special thanks to Football Club President Mick Tickner for organizing, serving and providing a fun Mother's Day music compilation for our mum's to enjoy on the sidelines.

And earlier in the week our Under 7's coach Brad also conducted a special Mother and Kid training session which was a huge success with lots of fun and laughter.

MAGPIES STAY UNBEATEN!

Ron Massey Cup

The Asquith Magpies maintained their unbeaten start to the 2018 season with a hard fought 24-18 win over the Cabramatta Two Blues at Storey Park last Sunday. The Magpies opened the scoring when a Matt Place pass found winger Alex Nicholls-O’Neill for the opening try in the 16th minute, before the Two Blues responded with a converted try to take the lead four minutes later.

A Cabramatta error right on half time led to Magpies fullback Braeden Batiste putting through a speculative grubber kick for opposite winger Kane Allan to score and give Asquith an 8-6 half time lead. Another Cabramatta mistake from the second half kickoff led to Asquith lock Jesse Martin scoring an opportunist try to extend the Magpies lead to 14-6 with Kurt Horton’s conversion.

Cabramatta scored a converted try to get back to 14-12 before the Magpies seemed to take control with well worked tries from Jake Attard and returning centre Mick Pearsall to give Asquith a 24-12 lead. Cabramatta came back with a converted try with nine minutes left to set up a grandstand finish.

The Magpies then held on in the closing stages to secure their victory.

Sydney Shield

The Magpies comfortably defeated Cabramatta 40-20 to stay in third place on the Shield ladder.

The Magpies are back on the road against the Guildford Owls at McCredie Park, Guildford next Sunday in both Shield (1pm) and Massey Cup (3pm) respectively.

Our Ron Massey Cup side has returned to the competition in 2018 with a flying start. At the completion of the first three rounds, the Magpies sit in third position on the ladder and remain undefeated with two wins and one draw under their belt.

In round three at home, a first half try blitz set up our Ron Massey side for a Mighty Magpies win. Tony Dosen, HHH-FM Sports Caller/Director, reviews Asquith's round three senior wins below.

Ron Massey Cup An unanswered five try first half blitz paved the way for the Asquith Magpies to defeat the Hills District Bulls 36-12 in their Ron Massey Cup match at Storey Park last Sunday. As they did the previous week against St Marys, the Magpies led 12-nil after just 10 minutes thanks to early tries from Josh Fraser and Braeden Batiste. Further brilliant tries from the Veamatahau brothers – Asher and Amanaki – extended the lead, before Alipate Tani scored untouched under the posts in the shadows of half time to give Asquith a match winning 30-nil lead at the break. The Bulls came back in the second half with two converted tries of their own to pull back to 30-12, before Asher Veamatahau scored his second long range try with 12 minutes left to make sure of Asquith’s unbeaten start to the season. He also landed six goals from six attempts to go with his two tries – giving him a personal tally of 20 points.

Sydney Shield Asquith were also untroubled to thrash the Bulls 66-12 in the Sydney Shield match at Storey Park last Sunday. After dropping the kick off and conceding the first try to go behind 6-nil early, the Magpies – led by returning hooker Shae Jarvis – quickly hit their straps to lead 30-6 at half time. The Magpies went on with the job in the second half to score 13 tries in their win – with Jack Goode, Gibson Popoali’i, Ngangarra Barker, and Jale Seninawanana all bagging doubles, while Tuki Jackson, Jeremy Marshall, Awishkar Gnyawali, Corey Browne-Higginbotham and Niko Apelu also got tries for Asquith.

Our Junior Magpies kicked off Season 2018 by participating in the NSW Rugby League #RESPECT Round.

Our young juniors displayed great sportsmanship by showing respect with handshakes to the opposition, coaches and match officials. From our mini Under 6's right through to our Under 20's, our junior magpies demonstrated that playing footy is all about having fun, making friends and playing as part of a team.

We couldn't think of a better way to kick-off Season 2018. #RESPECT

It is that time of year again to register to play Rugby League with the Asquith Magpies for the 2018 season.

For both new and existing players, please register via the website playnrl.com.au

Fees

Our fees continue to be amongst the cheapest in any sport:

Under 6’s being $50

Under 7 to Under 12 being $90

Under 13 to Under 17 being $120.

For families where there are 3 or more players, the 3 rd and subsequent players will only have to pay $2. For these fees, the player will receive their playing gear plus more. Also, 1 years membership to the Hornsby PCYC will be provided free of charge.

This year, the NSW Government is providing a rebate of sporting fees up to $100 per child. We will help you with obtaining this rebate.

Once registered and fees are paid, there is nothing more to do. The Coach or Team Manager for your team will be in touch with you in the coming weeks to let you know about training, trials and the season start. All you need to think about is buying boots, mouthguard and headgear if required.

Training

Our training is held on different days and times and in summary:

· Ages 6-8 will train on Thursday between 4 and 6 (time to be fixed by the coach) at James

Park Hornsby

· Ages 9 and upwards – will train at Storey Park between Monday and Friday on days and

times organised by the coach. Prior to 1 April, we will be training at Berry Park Mt Colah

from 4pm onwards (as advised by your coach or Team Manager).

Competition Dates & Locations

At this stage it is likely that the competition will start the weekend after Easter but this is yet to be confirmed. The competition will complete around the end of August. A full season draw will be made available prior to the season kicking off.

About 50% of Games will be played at Storey Park. The rest will be played on the North Shore from Berowra down to North Sydney. For Under 13's and over, games will also be played in the Manly district as well.

Magpies Waitara provides generous support to the Rugby League Club, which allows us to keep our registration fees very low, we encourage Parents to take up membership of the club. We are offering a reduced fee of $5.50 for the first year.

The Leagues club has great facilities including an excellent family Bistro and great entertainment.

The Football Club will do everything to ensure players and families have an excellent experience and the only things we ask of you are:

Players

Always respect your fellow team mates, opposition players and club officials. Play to the best of your ability and within the spirit of the game. Most of all, have fun and play in a safe manner. The game of Rugby League can help you develop many life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, respect and many more.

Parents/Friends/Family

Always encourage players and recognise great play and great effort (for your team and the opposition). Enjoy the game and be very proud of your child’s efforts. Don’t get involved in any anti-social behaviour and just ignore others who do. Don’t let other people ruin your day at the footy. If there is something happening at the club that you are not happy with, raise it with an official of the club and we will take immediate action if we can. Lastly, be a volunteer. A contribution of a few hours of your valuable time per season will help the club prosper and be able to provide the kids with the great gear we do provide.

Season 2018 is shaping up to get off to a flying start with our new-look Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield teams. Our senior coaches have been busy in the off-season signing some new talented players along with retaining some of our current players fresh off the back of a successful Sydney Shield campaign last year.

With the Asquith Magpies having signed an exclusive feeder agreement with the North Sydney Bears Intrust Super Premiership (NSW Cup team) as well as the North Sydney Bears Under 20's for the next 2 seasons (2018-19) there is no better time to join the mighty Asquith Magpies.

Sione Masima - 3 NRL games in 2014 for Cronulla and played ISP at Newtown and Blacktown since. 2nd rower who at 24 years old is looking to get back to the NRL after injuries in 2017 and 2016. Alipate Tani - backrow forward who played with the Magpies in 2017 coming from Peninsula in 2016. Matt Place - Penrith, Manly and Mounties ISP half - played NRL trial game in 2017.

A little bit of drizzle didn't deter us from having a fun afternoon last Thursday at our first Come Try Day. With the help of PlayNRL Game Development Officer, Daniel and our mini and mod coaches the kids had an absolute ball running drills, learning skills, meeting new friends and cheering their team mates on.

The Asquith Magpies will be holding some more Come and Try sessions in the coming weeks. If you have a child (4+) and are interested in them joining a fun, active team sport for Winter 2018, come along and meet our League-Safe accredited coaches, parents and committee for a chat, we'll be happy to answer any of your queries and the kids can have fun learning new skills.

The Asquith Magpies are pleased to announce that in 2018 we are back in the Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield Competitions run by the NSWRL. We will also be fielding a C Grade team. Asquith have entered into an exclusive 2 year Pathways Partnership with the North Sydney Bears which will see a clear pathway for our Ron Massey, Sydney Shield and Under 19's players as well any North Sydney Junior League player aspiring to reach the NRL with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

At least one of the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield rounds will be played at North Sydney Oval along with their ISP and Jersey Flegg games and this will present a great opportunity for our young Magpies teams to play between matches on the Bears home ground.

Leading the Magpies in this exciting new partnership with the Bears will be Head Coach, Pat Weisner. Pat has had years of experience both playing and coaching in the UK before returning to Australia and playing and coaching Cabramatta and Blacktown in both Ron Massey Cup and ISP. Pat will be joined by former Asquith player Brad Horder as his Assistant Coach as well as Richie Philips (Strength & Conditioning), Andrew Clout (Trainer & Strapper), Dan Cochran (Trainer & Assistant) and Justin Fox (Game Day Manager) all joining Asquith stalwarts, Glenn Worne (Trainer) and Greg Loomes (Trainer) at the Magpies.

We are also excited to have Daniel Hutton who has many years experience both as a Trainer and Coach with the NRL, South Sydney and Rouse Hill Coaching our 19s. Daniel was also Head Trainer of the Massey & Shield teams in 2016 before winning a C Grade Premiership in the Parramatta Competition this year.

A blend of old and new will see us venture into a strong C Grade (Under 19s) Competition in 2018. Last year we unfortunately lost a few players to rugby league or to other clubs because we were unable to field a team but hopefully in 2018 we will see many of these guys return and along with our new exclusive pathways agreement with the North Sydney Bears we should see some talent coming back from both Norths SG Ball (Under 18s) when they finish their competition in April and Norths Jersey Flegg (Under 20s) throughout the season.

Our C Grade team officials are as follows:

Head Coach - Daniel Hutton who has had a wealth of coaching and training experience with the NRL, South Sydney and was Head Trainer of the Asquith Magpies Ron Massey/Sydney Shield Squad in 2016. Daniel is also Assistant Coach of the North Sydney Bears SG Ball in 2018.

Assistant Coach/Trainer - Neal Ford previously from Rouse Hill and Head Trainer for North Sydney Bears SG Ball in 2018.

Trainer - Mitch Gaffey who has also worked previously with Daniel.

Trainer - Adrian Barnett who has played Ron Massey and Sydney Shield with the Asquith Magpies and is now turning his hand to being a team official.

Manager - Hugh Hutton, Daniel's father who has assisted, supported and worked alongside Daniel many times in the past.

We are also pleased to announce that Ryan Wheeler has been appointed Coach of the Sydney Shield Team for 2018. Ryan who has played Ron Massey and Sydney Shield over a number of years and been with the Magpies for several seasons, will work closely alongside Pat and Daniel.

This is an exciting time for the Asquith Magpies and a great opportunity for our Coaches to work alongside of the Bears Coaches in Shane Millard (ISP Head Coach), Will Leyshon (Jersey Flegg - 20s) and Peter Palmer (SG Ball - 18s).

On Sunday 15th October our junior players and their families gathered at Crosslands Reserve to celebrate and reflect on a fantastic year of football. Our junior magpies ran themselves raggered with a little help from the fairy floss and snow cones on offer while participating in lots of fun games and activities.

We also got to celebrate the recipients of our 2017 Club Awards. Congratulations to the following volunteers who were awarded our club awards for the year. Thank you for your valued efforts and contributions to the Asquith Magpies throughout the year.

On Friday night our senior players, officials and club volunteers gathered at Magpies Waitara for our annual presentation night. It was an enjoyable evening involving canapes and refreshments while having a good chat reflecting on what was a successful season for our seniors. Our Sydney Shield team have done us proud in 2017, making it all the way to the Preliminary Final.

Unfortunately the result didn't go our way with the Magpies going down to St Marys 24-32 at Lidcombe Oval. Our boys put up a tough fight and played with true grit and determination. To have made it this far in the season is an achievement in itself.

Well done to the players, coaches, trainers and all involved in a what was a monumental season for our Shield team!

Well done to our U9's who successfully made their first ever Grand Final. Our kids tackled out of their skins, displayed an enormous amount of heart and showed a great amount of team spirit, eventually going down to Lane Cove Tiger 34- 14. Congratulations to our U10 Junior Magpies who defeated the Berowra Wallabies in a hard fought match during the Grand Final at North Sydney Oval on Saturday 2nd September.

It was a tight contest right up to the final siren, with our boys eventually running in triumphant 30-28. Well done!

Congratulations to our U16 junior magpies who traveled to Lottoland (aka Brookvale Oval) to take on the Mona Vale Raiders in the combined Manly-Warringah/North Sydney District Rugby League Grand Final. In a very hard fought, tight contest, our boys put in a valiant effort and were eventually pipped at the post 28-26. See some of the highlights from the Grand Final below.

Our U13's had yet another big year, in 2017. Playing in the first division of the joint Manly North Sydney Competition our U13's made their third Grand Final appearance in 5 years. With 22 registered players, some new and some old, this season our boys learnt what being part and playing in a team is all about.

Having beaten all teams in their division this year, the Under 13's took on Manly Christian Brothers at Brookvale Oval in the big decider. Unfortunately it was not the result we were after with Asquith going down 4-28. However, the scoreboard didn't reflect the great amount of effort our boys put in, continually putting their bodies on the line. The boys are now looking forward to hopefully going one better in 2018.

Magpies Super Coach Simon has congratulated his team on a great seasons effort. "It has been a pleasure to watch each and every player improve throughout the year. Enjoy your break, because the Beep Test awaits from February onwards!"

Our U7 juniors have pulled off an amazing feat in 2017, they remained undefeated for the entire season!

Here's how Coach Mick summed up his flock of mini magpies:

"Even though we were undefeated, the opposition teams weren't easy-beats and they all threw everything at us. Through great team work and support our kids defended their behinds off every single game and it was our defense that kept our winning streak going all year. We had kids that had played before and we had kids that hadn't. By the end of the season they were all there to play for each other and to have fun doing it."

Congratulations to our U7 mini magpies, we can't wait to see what the 2018 season holds install for you and we will be keeping a keen eye on your progress and development in the years to come.

Due to difficulties in resourcing the team, the club has decided to not participate in the Ron Massey Cup for the 2017 season.

Having lost 12 players from last season due to retirement, moving overseas and club transfers, we were going to struggle to have a team that could compete at this level. The club is a proud club that won't participate in a competition if we don't feel we can be competitive and give our supporters something to cheer about.

So, what are we doing? We will continue in the Sydney Shield and Simon Clarke will coach the team. We are confident we will have a competitive team for the Sydney Shield. We are also looking at having an A Grade team in the combined Norths and Manly competition to provide a pathway to the Sydney Shield Team.

Over the next 12 months, the Club will be looking at its operations and determine how we can do better. There are a lot of learnings from the past 4 years in competing at the RMC level. We believe there will be changes to competition structures over the next year or so and we need to be prepared if we want to participate.

The club would like to welcome Christine Laing as Senior Administrator for the club. Christine brings much Rugby League Administration experience and will be of great assistance as we rebuild.

Of course, in addition to our Seniors, we will be having a huge focus on the development of our juniors.

Training for the Senior Squads commences at 6.15 for 6.30, 10 January 2017 at Berry Park Mt Colah. Training will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at that ground up to end of March. From 1 April training will move back to Storey Park.

Welcome to Asquith Magpies Season 2017

Whilst our Registration Day has come and gone, we are still open to new registrations.

Simply visit the website playnrl.com

Select New Registration, Player, enter the Club Asquith and key in your Email address. An email will be sent to you to select a Password. You then go back into playnrl.com and key in the password. The system will then ask you for information about the player. You will also need a credit card to pay the Registration Fees.

Our registration fees continue to be amongst the cheapest in any sport with Under 6’s being $50, Under 7 to Under 12 being $80 and Under 13 to Under 17 being $110 for the 2017 season. Under 19's registration will be free. For families re-registering more than one child you will need to register them all at the same time to take advantage of the multi-registration discount, i.e., where there are 3 or more children registering, the 3rd and subsequent child will only have to pay $2. For these fees, the player will receive their playing gear, insurance cover, plus more.

Once registered and fees are paid, there is nothing more to do. The Coach or Team Manager for your team will be in touch with you by mid- to late February to let you know about training, trials and the season start. For new players who registered via playnrl.com, you will need to bring the original birth certificate or passport to the first training session.

Our training is held on different days and times and in summary:

· Ages 6-8 will train on Thursday between 4 and 6 (time to be fixed by the coach) at James Park Hornsby

· Ages 9 and upwards– will train at Storey Park between Monday and Friday on days and times organised by the coach. Prior to 1 April, we will be training at Berry Park from 4pm onwards on Tuesdays and Thursdays (as advised by your coach or Team Manager).

At this stage it is likely that the competition will start early April but this is yet to be confirmed. The competition will complete around the end of August. A full season draw will be made available prior to the season kicking off.

As a club we welcome you back. As the Asquith Leagues Club provides generous support to the Rugby League Club, which allows us to keep our registration fees very low, we encourage parents to take up membership of our Leagues club, Magpies Waitara.

The club has many excellent facilities including:

· An excellent Bistro called The Kitchen

· An Asian Restaurant called Lucky Magpies (beautiful food)

· A new area known as The Pavilion (a great place to relax with family or friends)

· New Children facilities

· Friendly bar and Entertainment and Function Centre

For only $5.50 per year, you have access to a great facility for dining, entertainment or just relaxation.

The Football Club will do everything to ensure players and families have an excellent experience and the only things we ask of you are:

Players

Always respect your fellow team mates, opposition players and club officials. Play to the best of your ability and within the spirit of the game. Most of all have fun and play in a safe manner. The game of Rugby League can help you develop many life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, respect and many more.

Parents/Friends/Family

Always encourage players and recognise great play and great effort (for your team and the opposition). Enjoy the game and be very proud of your child’s efforts. Don’t get involved in any anti-social behaviour and just ignore others who do. Don’t let other people ruin your day at the footy. If there is something happening at the club that you are not happy with, raise it with an official of the club and we will take immediate action if we can.

Lastly, be a volunteer. A contribution of a few hours of your valuable time per season will help the club prosper and be able to provide the kids with the great gear we do provide. We look forward to a great season ahead.

The Mighty Asquith Magpies are looking for players for all age groups.
