How to become a Magpie
Rugby League is a wonderful sport that a lot of children and young adults enjoy playing. Not only is it a way of making many new friends, it is a way for children to develop their fitness, flexibility, self-confidence, sportsmanship and life skills in general. Such skills include teamwork, listening, communication and leadership. For those with the appropriate talent, desire and work ethic, Rugby League provides pathways to achieve success at the elite level.
Parents should be aware that Junior Rugby League is a different game to the NRL that you see on TV. Junior Rugby League is played in a protected and controlled environment known as "Safe Play". The aim of the sport is to provide kids with the opportunity to "safely" play in a team sport, develop their skills, make friends and have a lot of fun. Indeed, Junior Rugby League has a lower incidence of injury than many other sports (as evidenced by the Medibank Survey into injuries in sport). At Asquith Rugby League Football Club, our commitment is to provide the opportunities for children and young adults to play Rugby League and for parents to be involved. We strive to do this in a safe, friendly environment for all. The NRL on the other hand is a professional sport where the whole aim is to win the Premiership. Of course, we always hope that some of our players can develop to the NRL level over the years.
Rugby League also provides lots of opportunities for parents and guardians of children. Not only do you get to see children play, you can enjoy the many social events that occur in our club and you can participate as a volunteer.
In 2019, we will strive to have teams in all Junior grades from Under 6 through to Under 18 and Senior Grades of Under 20, Sydney Shield and Ron Massey.
For our Juniors, our Registration Fees continue to be at the lowest level and they are:
Under 6 - $50
Under 7 to Under 12 - $90.00
Under 13 to Under 18 - $120.00
The player receives shorts, socks and jersey to keep and much more throughout the season. Note, if you register 3 or more players in a season, the 3rd and subsequent player only pays a $2 registration fee.
Asquith Rugby League Football Club provides skilled and accredited coaching staff and all of our trainers are League Safe accredited. All of our volunteers are asked to operate under not only the ARL Code of Conduct but our own club policy as well. All of this ensures that players develop their skills in a professional, friendly and safe environment.
We also commit a number of resources to the development of players.
If you are interested in joining the Mighty Magpies as a volunteer (coach, team manager, trainer, canteen worker, barbeque worker or other official), you will be more than welcome. All our volunteers are provided with apparel, come to all the social events and presentations and have a great time. Please ring Football Club President Mick Tickner on 0412886083 if interested.
If you don't have time to be involved with the club as a volunteer, you can still become a fan of the Mighty Magpies. We tend to have Junior teams playing at Storey Park on most Saturdays (with breaks during school holidays) and on Sundays every couple of weeks. Come down and watch and be part of the excitement. We have a canteen and BBQ running on all game days. Keep your eye out for the weekly draws and results.
Our Rugby League teams participate in the North Sydney Junior Rugby League competition for ages 6 to 12 and in the combined Manly and North Sydney Junior Leagues for ages 13-19.
The North Sydney Junior competition for ages 6 to 12 play against teams from North Sydney Brothers (Tunks Park), Willoughby (Willoughby Park), Pennant Hills/Cherrybrook (Greenway Park), Hills Hawkes (Dural Park), Lane Cove (Tantallon Oval), Kuringai Cubs (Barra Brui Oval) and Berowra (Warina St). These games are usually played on Saturday morning with the first games usually commencing around 9am.
The joint North Sydney/Manly competition for ages 13-A Grade are played throughout the North Sydney District (as per above) and Manly (dependant on the teams in the competition). Under 13 to Under 15 games are played on Saturday, generally in the afternoon whilst Under 16's through to A Grade are played on Sundays.
In 2018, Asquith will have teams in the following age groups:
