The Asquith Magpies moved into the Sydney Shield Top 4 for the first time this season with an easy 52-10 thrashing of the Belrose Eagles in their match at Storey Park last Sunday.
The Magpies took an early lead when Jake Beetson scored the first of his three tries in just the fourth minute and were not headed for the rest of the day. Asquith threatened to turn the match into a cakewalk when five eighth Hayden McWilliam and returning North Sydney Bears centre Curtis Johnston scored to give the Magpies a 14-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Belrose then struck back when they capped off their best period of the match with their only two tries to bring scores back to 14-10. Beetson then scored his second try late in the first half to give Asquith a comfortable 20-10 lead at the break.
The Magpies then put the match beyond doubt when Beetson completed his hat trick in the opening minute of the second half, before ‘supersub’ Jake Pickering scored from a Johnston break two minutes later for a 32-10 lead.
A ruthless Asquith then went on with the job with further tires to interchange player Ryan Monaghan in the 54th minute, Justin Burt in the 60th minute, Pickering’s second try with 10 minutes left, and skipper Braeden Batiste in the last minute to close out the easy 52-10 win.
After Asquith’s Ron Massey Cup team enjoyed their weekend bye, both sides are back on the road over Easter.
