The Asquith Magpies scored their first win for the 2019 Ron Massey Cup season with a stunning 36-4 thrashing of the Western Suburbs Magpies at Leichhardt Oval last Saturday Night.

In another tough contest that had its share of spite, Asquith started well when Jake Beetson scored the first try in the eighth minute and were never headed for the rest of the night.

Asquith ground their way on top with winger Nick O’Meley’s first try in the 20th minute, before Kurtis Preece scored in the 32nd minute and skipper Matt Place got his try on the stroke of half time to give Pat Wiesner’s men a commanding 24-0 lead at the break.

Wests scored early in the second half to entertain thoughts of a comeback, before their ill discipline allowed Honeti Tuha to slot the first of his two penalty goals mid way through the second half.

Asquith secured victory with O’Meley’s second try with 19 minutes left, before Wests had a player sin binned four minutes later.

Tuha then landed his second penalty goal, before Curtis Johnston completed the Asquith win with his second try in two games nine minutes from time.

Asquith’s Sydney Shield team were not as fortunate when they were trounced 44-18 by defending Premiers East Campbelltown Eagles at Worrell Oval, Ruse last Sunday.

The Magpies conceded a try in the opening minute and were always on the back foot to be down 28-0 after half an hour before Jared Palmer scored to get Asquith on the board at 28-6 down at half time.

Returning hooker Daniel Vasek scored two second half tries when the game was lost to at least make the final score respectable against the early season Sydney Shield favourites.
